“Improving neighborhoods to promote physical activity and urban safety: a participatory citizen project in Bilbao”

See the results of our study

Unhealthy lifestyle habits have a close relationship with the onset of cardiovascular diseases and obesity. Previous studies have already shown the importance of city factors and neighbourhood characteristics on the health and physical activity of its residents.
The objective of this project is to analyse the urban environment factors related to physical activity, safety, and health in Bilbao neighbourhoods with different socioeconomic contexts. For this purpose, a community diagnosis has been carried out from a citizen perspective, using the Photovoice methodology.
The results obtained in this study were presented at the II Citizen Science Day. Based on the conclusions drawn by the citizens themselves, a report of policy proposals has been developed to improve the urban environments of physical activity in the city of Bilbao.
